The capital city of Oregon is Salem and it is located in the center of the Willamette River valley about 47 miles from Portland Oregon the largest city of this state; Salem being the second largest. Salem is also the county seat of Marion County. According to Wikipedia, "Salem was founded in 1842, became the capital of the Oregon Territory in 1851, and was incorporated in 1857."

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Salem had an estimated population of 152,239 in 2006. Its land area covers 45 square miles with 2,994.2 people per square mile.
