Punta Gorda (Fat Point) is a little old town that is located in Roatan, one of the Bay Islands of Honduras. Punta Gorda is away from the main tourist attractions which are located on the West end of the island. This island is the oldest permanent settlement in Roatán which was founded shortly after April 12, 1797, when some 3,000 Garífuna deportees from the Caribbean island of San Vicente were stranded on Roatán by the British. Many Garífuna settled in Punta Gorda and others migrated to Trujillo and other Caribbean coasts of Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Belize, but their first Honduran home is still in place.
Up to this day, the Garifuna celebrate their anniversary of arrival and many of them come from all over the coast. It is a big event.
I recently visited this small town and it seems very quiet and the people I encountered where very friendly.
Here are some of the pictures I was able to take. I hope you enjoy them.
