Tokyo is one of the 47 prefectures that make the country of Japan. This city is the capital of Japan and it is the largest city in the world comprising of more than eight million inhabitants living in 23 city wards; each is considered a municipality. Rather than being a prefecture, Tokyo is considered to be one of the largest metropolis in the world. This metropolis include over 12 million people living in surrounding cities, towns, and villages.

Tokyo was known as Edo but it was renamed to Tokyo in the year 1867. The name Tokyo means "eastern capital." This city is situated in the Kanto region of Japan occupying an area of 2,187.08 square kilometers.

The 2 major airports in Tokyo are Narita International Airport and Haneda Airport.
