Facts About Antarctica Location: Antarctica is a continent (the fifth) and it is mostly in the south of the Antarctic Circle. Antarctica is centered around the South Pole and it is the coldest place on earth. Population: Antarctica has no permanent residents Land Size: Antarctica is a vast area that covers more than 14 million square kilometers Borders: Antarctica has no borders with any country Bordering Body of Water: According to Wikipedia, Antarctica is considered to be surrounded by the Southern Ocean; other alternatives that are considered are that it is surrounded by the southern Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans, or by the southern waters of the World Ocean. Industries: Antarctica is a place where only Scientific undertakings can be performed. Commercial pursuits does not take place in this vast and cold place. Fishing off the coast and tourism are both based abroad which account for Antarctica's limited economic activity. Antarticca Territories: Antarctica is divided into territories and in parenthesis are the countries those territories belong to: British Antarctic Territory (United Kingdom), Ross Dependency (New Zealand), Adélie Land (France), Peter I Island (Norway), Australian Antarctic Territory (Australia), Queen Maud Land (Norway), Antártica (Chile), Argentine Antarctica (Argentina), Marie Byrd Land (Unclaimed territory)Major Cities: Antarctica has only one major city and it is called McMurdo Station which has a population of only 1,258.
